SSgt (BM) Christian Dullea was born in Abergavenny, South Wales in 1993. During his childhood, he was quick to take to the Euphonium and begin his musical progression through the roots of the Welsh Brass Bands. The local town band and county music service were vital in his early development as a musician; however, it was Powys Army Cadet Force that sparked his admiration and loyalty to military music. From here, he naturally progressed to the Army Reserves and joined The Regimental Band & Corps of Drums of the Royal Welsh in 2011. During his service in the Army Reserves, he took the opportunity to move to Manchester and study at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM).
SSgt (BM) Dullea continued his service in the Army Reserves whilst studying for his Undergraduate Bachelor of Music degree. At the RNCM, he studied Euphonium under the tutelage of Dr David Thornton and Profesor Steven Mead. SSgt (BM) Dullea took advantage of the performance opportunities that Manchester had to offer, including playing with some of the finest Brass Bands in the country, such as Carlton Main Frickley Colliery and Grimethorpe Colliery Band.
Upon graduating from the RNCM in 2016, SSgt (BM) Dullea transferred from the Army Reserves to the Royal Corps of Army Music and was proud to hold the Principle Euphonium seat at the Band of the King’s Division. He continued this position in the more recently formed, British Army Band Catterick in 2019. A particular highlight of his career so far was a tour to The United Stated of America with the British Army Brass Band. Here, he had the opportunity to perform as a soloist throughout the tour, including the opening concert of the Perishing’s Own Tuba- Euphonium festival in Washington DC.
Commencing the British Army Bandmaster Course in September 2020 was a long-term ambition and goal for SSgt (BM) Dullea. He relished the challenges that the course presented and felt extremely fortunate to be provided with such a high level of tuition. Upon graduating, SSgt (BM) Dullea was assigned to British Army Band Catterick and feels particularly privileged to have returned to one of the Army’s professional brass bands.
